The AFC Champions League Two, commonly known as ACL Two, continues to establish itself as Asia’s second-tier continental club competition. Introduced as part of the Asian Football Confederation’s restructuring of club tournaments, the competition replaced the AFC Cup and now sits below the AFC Champions League Elite in the regional hierarchy. The tournament features 32 clubs from across Asia and offers teams a pathway to higher-profile continental competition.
Recent editions have highlighted growing competitiveness across both West and East Asian clubs. Sharjah claimed the 2024-25 title after defeating Singapore’s Lion City Sailors in the final, while the 2025-26 season has produced notable knockout-stage storylines involving clubs such as Esteghlal, Sepahan, Persib Bandung and Ratchaburi FC. The AFC has also promoted the competition more aggressively through expanded branding, regional broadcasting and commercial partnerships.
The tournament’s influence is also reshaping domestic football ambitions in several countries. Indonesia recently secured additional future qualification slots for ACL Two, reflecting the AFC’s evolving allocation model and the rising profile of Southeast Asian football. With stronger financial incentives, wider participation and increasing fan engagement, ACL Two is becoming an important development platform for clubs seeking continental experience while competing for international recognition.
